['templwʊd əv 'tʃelsi], Samuel John Gurney Hoare ['hɔə], 2. Baronet (seit 1915), 1. Viscount (seit 1944), britischer Politiker, * London 24. 2. 1880, ✝ ebenda 7. 5. 1959; 1910-44 Unterhausabgeordneter der Konservativen, 1922-29 (mit Unterbrechung 1924) Luftfahrtminister. Als Staatssekretär für Indien (1931-35) wirkte er entscheidend an der Ausarbeitung der indischen Verfassung mit. Ab Juni 1935 Außenminister, schloss er mit Deutschland das Flottenabkommen. Nach dem italienischen Einfall in Abessinien im Oktober 1935 arbeitete er mit dem französischen Ministerpräsidenten P. Laval den »Hoare-Laval-Plan« aus, der u. a. die Abtretung großer Teile Abessiniens an Italien vorsah. Deshalb heftig kritisiert, trat er im Dezember 1935 zurück; 1936-37 Erster Lord der Admiralität; 1937-39 Innenminister, unterstützte das Münchener Abkommen von 1938; 1939-40 Lordsiegelbewahrer, April-Mai 1940 erneut Luftfahrtminister. Als Botschafter in Spanien (1940-44) setzte er sich für die Verhinderung des von Deutschland angestrebten spanischen Kriegseintritts ein.
